WORK ROOM offers Japanese style tattoos in Brooklyn, NY.

Established in 2022 by Japanese style tattoo artist, Chris Wielk, WORK ROOM is an appointment-only tattoo studio in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The studio focuses on Japanese style tattooing, both large-scale bodysuit tattooing and smaller one-point style tattoos, flash, or custom works in a comfortable private setting.

Bio

Chris Wielk specializes in Japanese style bodysuit and one-point tattooing, and has written multiple books on the subject, including 100 Japanese One Points, Japanese One Points Volume 2, and Outlines and Sketches for Japanese Tattoos.

Chris Wielk takes a contemporary approach based on traditional horimono style tattoos. drawing inspiration from Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, Japanese temple and shrine carvings, and Showa era tattooing.

  • Chris Wielk began tattooing in 2013 under the guidance of Nalla Smith in Brooklyn, New York. After a stint in New Jersey Chris relocated to San Francisco, California in 2016, splitting his time between multiple street shops to hone a broad range of tattooing styles.

In 2017 Chris shifted focus to the full-time pursuit of Japanese style tattooing and formed a mentoring relationship with Jill “Horiyuki” Bonny. With Jill's instruction and support, Chris conducted multiple research and education trips in Japan.

When Jill opened her first street shop, Studio Kazoku, in San Francisco's Haight Ashbury neighborhood, Chris became her first full time employee. It was here under Jill’s guidance that he was fully immersed and educated in Japanese style tattooing. In 2018, he published his first book, 100 One-Point Japanese Tattoos.

In 2019, Chris relocated back to Brooklyn. Splitting his time between California and New York, Chris traveled monthly to continue working on body suits and large scale works for clients in around the country.

In 2020, in the height of the pandemic, Chris released Japanese One-Points Volume Two and sold hundreds of copies through multiple reprints. He also contributed to multiple painting projects, creating a large volume of artworks during this lockdown period.

At the end of 2022 Chris opened his first private studio, WORK ROOM, where he continues to tattoo clients from around the world.

  • While some sketching on the skin with markers can be done during an in-person consultation, all drawings are prepared for the day of the appointment only. Some designs are stenciled on while others are drawn on freehand. Chris does not send out artwork prior to the appointment. If you are unsure of what you want it is recommend to pick something from flash or reference previous tattoos or paintings.

  • If you have a question about something you don’t see—just ask. If Chris can do the design requested he would be happy to. If someone else can do it better he will let you know. Chris does not do any form of realism or neo-traditional tattooing.

  • Cover-ups are available on a case-by-case basis if Chris feels strongly that the tattoo can be accomplished to the desired outcome. Often some amount of lasering to lighten the original tattoo will achieve the best result. In some cases Chris can complete unfinished work if it is no longer possible to get tattooed by the original artist.

BOOKING GUIDELINES:

A consultation is required for all large scale work, if you are traveling this can be done virtually. For large work multiple appointments will be scheduled upon initial booking in 3 month increments. The wait time is typically 1-3 months depending on the clients availability.

PRICING:

STANDARD RATE: $250/ hour- for all custom tattoos, large or small.

  • This rate is offered only when approaching the suit as one complete tattoo. This means it will be outlined, then shaded, then colored in its entirety, not piece by piece. The intention is to create the most cohesive tattoo possible, by planning and designing the suit as a whole. A body suit will be defined as a minimum of full backpiece (bottom of neck to back of thighs) and two limbs (arms, legs, or one of each.) While a blank canvas and full suit is ideal, this is open to those who may have other tattoos, as long as the space for back and at least two limbs is open.

    • This rate is not intended for extensive cover-up work, though some small tattoos might be worked around. Areas needing large cover-ups may be charged at the full rate of $250/ hour

    • These tattoos are expected to take at least a couple of years to complete with regular progress.

    • Clients must be serious and commit to at least 18 hours of work per year to keep this rate, with at least 9 hours being done in Chris's home studio in Brooklyn.

    • While this rate can’t be applied retroactively, current or future clients may convert their tattoo in progress to a body suit at any time, with the new rate applied.

If you are interested in discussing a full suit or have any questions regarding the process or eligibility, please leave a note in the form or email Chris directly.
